Motorolaรขโ�ฌโ�ขs phones has changed its ringtone formats several times over the years. This is one reason why some of its users become frustrated when trying to download free ringtones from the Internet. A length or duration of the note is represented by a 0, a half note by 1, a quarter note is 2222, and a sixteenth note is 44. The type of note is set by typing in a number between 2 and 4 in various combinations (e.g., A is 2,B is 22, C is 222, d is 3, etc.) To set the octave, type 00 followed by an asterisk (*). The pitch also requires its own set of symbols: a sharp note is executed by keying in three zeros (000) while a flat is four zeros (0000). To set the volume, press 8 followed by the number 1 to 15.

There are some differences in the Motorola code than with RTTTL and other keypress formats. For example, itรขโ�ฌโ�ขs a lot shorter. The sixteenth and thirty second notes are just one digit long, and it can handle flats unlike the standard RTTTL. It also indicates the sharp or flat before the note rather than after.

One of the strongest features of Motorolaรขโ�ฌโ�ขs format is that you donรขโ�ฌโ�ขt have to retype a whole section of ringtone codes for parts in the song that repeat themselves. Just insert the section inside a parenthesis then type in how many times you want it to repeat. This is very handy for songs that have a running leitmotif or a common beat. It also lets you stay in the Motorola keypress maximum character count (you can only have 120 characters) and still have very complex songs.

Wireless Jargon / Glossary

Wireless networking, like so many things in life -- and especially the ones that have anything to do with computers -- is filled with jargon. Hi-tech babble baffles many Don't be intimidated, though: here's a quick computer-speak to English guide to help you out.

802.11. The name of the wireless networking standard, set by the IEEE. Ensures that wireless devices are interoperable.

Driver. A piece of computer software that tells the computer how to talk to devices that are plugged into it. For wireless networking, the drivers you need to install will come on a CD with any equipment you buy.

Ethernet. The most common way of connecting to a LAN. Any wires you might have connecting your computers together now are Ethernet wires, and the cable connecting your modem to your computer is probably an Ethernet wire too.

Ghz. Gigahertz. A measurement of frequency -- one gigahertz is one billion cycles per second. You may recognise the measurement from computer processor speeds, which are now also measured in Ghz.

IEEE. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. In charge of the wireless networking standard, as well as many other computer-related standards (including the Ethernet standard). They ensure that computer equipment made by different manufacturers can work together.

Interoperable. Means that two pieces of equipment are compatible -- you can use them together, because they stick to the standards. You should not get any wireless equipment that isn't interoperable.

LAN. Local Area Network. A network that is generally confined to one building, such as a home or office. A wireless LAN is also known as a WLAN.

Linux. An alternative operating system to Windows. Computers running Linux can run many programs and connect to the Internet without needing Windows. Linux is free to download and you are allowed to give it to friends to use. A lot of wireless devices run Linux, or are compatible with it.

MAN. Metropolitan Area Network. A network that covers a larger area, for example a town or city. Wireless MANs (men?) spread Internet access all over the area, but are expensive to set up. They are sometimes used on university campuses.

Mbps. Megabits per second, a measurement of connection speed. Not to be confused with MBps, megabytes per second. There are eight megabits in a megabyte.

PAN. Personal Area Network. These are networks made up of devices connected together in one small area. For example, your computer with a USB keyboard and mouse connected is a PAN. PANs can be wireless, using a technology called Bluetooth.

PCI. Peripheral Component Interconnect. This is a way of installing new devices inside your computer, such as graphics cards and network devices. If you want to install a wireless card inside your computer, you will be using PCI.

PCMCIA. Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (some say it should stand for 'People Can't Memorise Computer Industry Acronyms'). A standard for plugging credit card-sized devices into a laptop, to give it extra capabilities. PCMCIA is a great way of adding wireless networking to your laptop as easily as inserting a disk.

USB. Universal Serial Bus. A port used for connecting all sorts of devices to a computer, including keyboards, mice, printers, external drives, and almost anything else you can think of. If you don't want to open up your computer and you don't have a laptop, you can get a USB wireless device.

WAN. Wide Area Network. A network that is connected over more than one physical site, such as a business that has its computers in two countries connected on one network. The Internet, for example, is a WAN -- the biggest WAN in the world.

WEP. Wired Equivalent Privacy. The old standard for encrypting wireless networks. Unfortunately, it was found to be insecure back in 2001, and so should no longer be used.

WPA. Wi-Fi Protected Access. Basically an upgrade of WEP to fix its security problems. WPA-encrypted networks change their encryption method often, to avoid becoming vulnerable, and also shut down for thirty seconds if they detect a suspected attack.

Data on the Road With Your Cell Phone

Finally you're spending the weekend at your friend's cabin up at the lake. You managed to sneak your laptop up there because you know you'll need to check your e-mail at least once or twice while you're out of town.

If there happens to be Ethernet or Wifi available you'll be in luck - just plug in and you'll be ready to go! But what if you are in a secluded area? How should you get online?

Sometimes the best solution is to either have a cell phone or cell phone/PDA that acts as a modem, my favorites are the T-Mobile Sidekick and Treo 650.If you have a way to dial in to your ISP this can be a solution.

AOL has local numbers around the US for example. The speed will be slow and you may need to pay roaming charges if you happen to be roaming on a different network, but you will be online!

Keep in mind that some but not all phones can be used as a modem and even then some require a wired connection. If you're lucky you'll have one that works via IR (infared) or Bluetooth, so they can talk wirefree to your computer.

Sometimes a phone will have multiple ways to connect to a laptop - choose Bluetooth over IR. USB is also a fine choice if you don't mind wires. Using USB is easiest - you just plug the USB cable into the phone and the other end plugs into a USB port on your laptop.

Connecting via Bluetooth means that you will need to PAIR the devices first. This means they need to identify each other and talk to each other when they are in range (about 30'). You will need to turn on your Treo 650's bluetooth function and then make sure it is "discoverable". Then turn on your laptop's bluetooth, pair the two devices.

You are now ready to dial up your ISP. You have two options. Use the cell phone as a traditional modem - using your voice minutes to transfer data. This will usually be very slow, but if you have free nighttime calling this may cost you nothing. The other option is to subscribe to your carrier's data service.

Prices range from $5/month for limited data service on some carriers, to $50/month on other carriers for unlimited data service. The norm is about $20-$30/month for unlimited service. This enables you to use your cell phone as a modem all the time even at home and minutes of internet do not count toward your monthly minutes. This service will usually require a "dial-up script" which you can get from the carrier or sometimes directly from the phone manufacturer's website. This script gets installed on your laptop.

Another option is to get a cellular card for your laptop. This is a modem/card that automatically accesses the internet via the cellular service. These come with a subscription in most cases.

If you need to be online and you can't wait to find Hotspots each time you need access - this is the way to go. Prices per month range from $29.99 to $79.99 depending on the carrier and level of service.

A few final words:

- Turn off bluetooth when you aren't using it - it drains the battery faster than when you have it turned off.

- If you don't have Bluetooth on your laptop you can buy a Bluetooth Adapter (often called a Bluetooth Dongle) for about $19.

-I recommend buying one branded by Linksys, Netgear or some other well-known company. There are some cheaper ones coming out of China that require special setup on your laptop and may not be as reliable.
